Are UK garden centres underperforming? Dries Jansen on data that could boost yield per sqm
HortWeek editor Matthew Appleby talks to Dries Jansen of Garden Center Advice about optimising garden centre performance through layout, assortment and realisation. Jansen began his career as an analyst at Intratuin in the Netherlands, working across 56 stores and €250 million of turnover, where he first used trends and data to identify predictable patterns. Working with garden centre architect Fred de Rijcke, he has since combined HortWeek's exclusive Top 250 Garden Centres data with market insight from the Netherlands, Germany, France and Belgium into a decision-making model for the UK. The system maps annual turnover against store area, individual store offerings, proximity to population centres and other variables to establish an average yield per square metre that every centre can be indexed against. Stores identified as having potential are then profiled individually on ambience, service, price and other measures, producing concrete action points. The vodcast includes the slides — UK maps, store comparisons, a Belgian case study and Dubai before-and-after shots — with timestamps for audio listeners.
